One of The View's Summer Picks, 2017!

Manhattan has many secrets. Some are older than the city itself.

The city sleeps. Selene DiSilva walks her dog along the banks of the Hudson. She is alone -- just the way she likes it. She doesn't believe in friends, and she doesn't speak to her family. Most of them are simply too dangerous.

In the predawn calm, Selene finds the body of a young woman washed ashore, gruesomely mutilated and wreathed in laurel. Her ancient rage returns. And so does the memory of a promise she made long ago -- when her name was Artemis.

"The Immortals is a lively re-imagining of classical mythology with an engaging premise, a page-turning plot, and an eye for the arresting and uncanny in contemporary urban life."
--Deborah Harkness, New York Times bestselling author of A Discovery of Witches

Jordanna Max Brodsky's wide-acclaimed debut, The Immortals, sets Greek Gods against a modern Manhattan backdrop. Look out for her next novel, Winter of the Gods, in February 2017.

From the bestselling author of The Spaceship Next Door: “I don’t know how old I am.My earliest memory is something along the lines of fire good, ice bad, so I think I predate written history, but I don’t know by how much. I like to brag that I’ve been there from the beginning, and while this may very well be true, I generally just say it to pick up girls.” --Adam the Immortal Surviving sixty thousand years takes cunning and more than a little luck. But in the twenty-first century, Adam confronts new dangers—someone has found out what he is, a demon is after him, and he has run out of places to hide.Worst of all, he has had entirely too much to drink. Immortal is a first person confessional penned by a man who is immortal, but not invincible. In an artful blending of sci-fi, adventure, fantasy, and humor, IMMORTAL introduces us to a world with vampires, demons and other “magical” creatures, yet a world without actual magic. At the center of the book is Adam. “I have been in quite a few tight situations in my long life. One of the first things I learned was if there is going to be a mob panic, don’t be standing between the mob and wherever it is they all want to go. The second thing I learned was, don’t try to run through fire.” --Adam the Immortal Adam is a sixty thousand year old man. (Approximately.) He doesn’t age or get sick, but is otherwise entirely capable of being killed. His survival has hinged on an innate ability to adapt, his wits, and a fairly large dollop of luck.He makes for an excellent guide through history . . . when he’s sober. Immortal is a contemporary fantasy for non-fantasy readers and fantasy enthusiasts alike.

In 1927, General Yang Sen invited Li Qingyun to Wanxian, China, to teach about health and longevity. Li Qingyun was reported to be 250 years old at the time, and his visit to Wanxian was big news. In 1970, Yang Sen compiled a book of his and others’ accounts of Li Qingyun, titled An Authentic and True Record of a 250-Year-Old Man, which Stuart Alve Olson started translating into English in 1982.

Besides the notion of someone living to 250 years of age, this book goes well beyond the biography of Li Qingyun’s life. It has great historical value, especially for Westerners who are unfamiliar with much of Chinese history towards the end of the Qing dynasty. It also explains incredible health therapies and provides information on what is now called Medical Qigong. Much is explained about Daoism on meditation, breathing, qigong exercise, food, sex, and philosophy for Daoist living. Another true gem of this book is the philosophical teachings, as much of this material has never been presented in English. The depth of information provided in this book surpasses any previously published work on Daoist health practices and philosophy. It is rare to come across a text with such abundance of insights and written with such clarity as this material provides.

Although Qigong Teachings of a Taoist Immortal: The Eight Essential Exercises of Master Li Ching-yun was published in 2002, which includes translations from Yang Sen’s book, the entire translation is now finally available. This book belongs in everyone’s library who studies or has an interest in Chinese philosophy, qigong regimes, and biographies.

A companion DVD—Li Qingyun’s Eight Brocades—is now available.

"An old-fashioned tale of tall talk, high ideals, and irresistible appeal . . . You will not read a historical thriller like this all year . . . [Egan] is a master storyteller." —Boston Globe

“Egan has a gift for sweeping narrative . . . and he has a journalist’s eye for the telltale detail . . . This is masterly work.” — New York Times Book Review

In this exciting and illuminating work, National Book Award winner Timothy Egan delivers a story, both rollicking and haunting, of one of the most famous Irish Americans of all time. A dashing young orator during the Great Hunger of the 1840s, Thomas Francis Meagher led a failed uprising against British rule, for which he was banished to a Tasmanian prison colony for life. But two years later he was “back from the dead” and in New York, instantly the most famous Irishman in America. Meagher’s rebirth included his leading the newly formed Irish Brigade in many of the fiercest battles of the Civil War. Afterward, he tried to build a new Ireland in the wild west of Montana—a quixotic adventure that ended in the  great mystery of his disappearance, which Egan resolves convincingly at last.

“This is marvelous stuff. Thomas F. Meagher strides onto Egan's beautifully wrought pages just as he lived—powerfully larger than life. A fascinating account of an extraordinary life.” — Daniel James Brown, author of The Boys in the Boat

“Thomas Meagher’s is an irresistible story, irresistibly retold by the virtuosic Timothy Egan . . . A gripping, novelistic page-turner.” — Wall Street Journal

Dissolve the distractions of ego to find our authentic selves in God

In his bestselling book Falling Upward, Richard Rohr talked about ego (or the False Self) and how it gets in the way of spiritual maturity. But if there's a False Self, is there also a True Self? What is it? How is it found? Why does it matter? And what does it have to do with the spiritual journey? This book likens True Self to a diamond, buried deep within us, formed under the intense pressure of our lives, that must be searched for, uncovered, separated from all the debris of ego that surrounds it. In a sense True Self must, like Jesus, be resurrected, and that process is not resuscitation but transformation.

  • Shows how to navigate spiritually difficult terrain with clear vision and tools to uncover our True Selves
  • Written by Father Richard Rohr, the bestselling author of Falling Upward
  • Examines the fundamental issues of who we are and helps us on our path of spiritual maturity

Immortal Diamond (whose title is taken from a line in a Gerard Manley Hopkins poem) explores the deepest questions of identity, spirituality, and meaning in Richard Rohr's inimitable style.

Many scientists and philosophers believe that you are no more than a machine. By their account there is no afterlife and you are no better than any other kind of animal. The existence of mankind, according to such thinkers, is purely the outcome of chance events. There never was any tendency, natural or supernatural, to produce life and the human mind. The universe is hostile or indifferent toward you, and you occupy no special place within it.

At the heart of this story of mankind lies not science but a rarely expressed philosophical assumption that modern science, at least in principle, tells all there is to know about you and the world. With his unique blend of cogency, clarity, and charm, philosopher Michael Augros hauls that assumption out into the light and demolishes it. The Immortal in You demonstrates how an astute use of common sense and a study of common human experience reveal that there is more to you--much more--than science could possibly say.

From the author of Who Designed the Designer?, this modern response to the ancient exhortation "Know thyself" delivers a wealth of fresh, powerful, and uplifting ideas about what it is to be human, which will engage thoughtful readers regardless of their beliefs.

Immortal is the only single-volume English-language survey of Iran’s military history. CIA analyst Steven R. Ward shows that Iran’s soldiers, from the famed “Immortals” of ancient Persia to today’s Revolutionary Guard, have demonstrated through the centuries that they should not be underestimated. This history also provides background on the nationalist, tribal, and religious heritages of the country to help readers better understand Iran and its security outlook. Immortal begins with the founding of ancient Persia’s empire under Cyrus the Great and continues through the Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988) and up to the present. Drawing on a wide range of sources including declassified documents, the author gives primary focus to the modern era to relate the build-up of the military under the last Shah, its collapse during the Islamic revolution, its fortunes in the Iran-Iraq War, and its rise from the ashes to help Iran become once again a major regional military power. He shows that, despite command and supply problems, Iranian soldiers demonstrate high levels of bravery and perseverance and have enjoyed surprising tactical successes even when victory has been elusive. These qualities and the Iranians’ ability to impose high costs on their enemies by exploiting Iran’s imposing geography bear careful consideration today by potential opponents.

WOULD YOU KILL TO LIVE FOREVER? When the body of a gunshot victim rolls into the Santa Fe morgue, it should be a day like any other for medical investigator Lillian Cruz. Yet upon examination, the corpse appears to be over a hundred years old with smallpox scars, and an odd wound protrudes from the victim’s leg. Lodged in the femur, under decrepit scar tissue, is a bullet shaped like a musket ball. The bullet looks like it was fired during the Civil War and had remained in the victim’s leg ever since. Rattled by the discovery, Cruz instructs her assistant to take specimens to the state authorities immediately and not to tell a soul about it. Minutes after the assistant leaves, the lights go dark in the morgue and Cruz is kidnapped. The Defense Intelligence Agency calls in former war correspondent Ethan Warner and his partner, Nicola Lopez, to discreetly investigate the disappearance. And very quickly, a relatively simple case turns into something much more sinister. With each new lead they uncover, Warner and Lopez are inadvertently bringing a warped and dangerous individual closer to achieving a catastrophic goal: immortality. In the spine-chilling tradition of Michael Crichton and James Rollins, Immortal is an action-packed blockbuster that combines science, suspense, and ingenious speculation.

Reviewers have written that IMMORTAL is "A gripping supernatural thriller," "fast-paced," "tightly plotted," "epic scale horror," "a joy," "so easy to pick up and so hard to put down!" and have compared this title favorably with titles by Stephen King and Peter Straub A future world parallel to our own is ruled by two souls trapped in one body, a powerful geneticist/demon named Apep. Apep feeds on the life force of those who inhabit this world to keep himself alive. Yet despite his genetic genius and mystical powers, he is dying. To make himself immortal, he embarks on a plan which threatens the existence of our world. Apep?s plan involves a series of brutal murders on our world which seem to have been committed by an inhuman beast. In the midst of these murders Jeremy Wheeler, a middle aged Psychologist, finds his early morning walk interrupted by an odd gnome-like man who identifies himself as Conrad LuPone. Conrad tells Jeremy that Jeremy is the link between his world and that of Apep. Conrad insists Jeremy is the single cohesive element who will either enable or prevent Apep?s plan from succeeding and determine the ultimate fate of this evil. Skeptical, it takes a series of strange events to convince Jeremy the gnomish man is right. Jeremy prepares for battle and, accompanied by Hank Davison, the local sheriff ? who had his own encounter with the extraordinary ? steps through a portal to Apep?s world. Jeremy meets a variety of interesting characters on his journey, and joins with an Engineer, Lori Hellman, and a boy, Mark Scott, who are also from his world, to assault Apep?s palace. "...an intriguing and suspenseful read. In the tradition of Stephen King and Peter Straub, who mix the supernatural and science fiction genres, Immortal tells of a man who takes revenge on a serial killer and, as a result, lets loose an evil that he must then attempt to conquer by traveling through time." Kate Templeton Fox for the OHIOANA QUARTERLY, the journal for the Ohioana Library Association. "A gripping supernatural thriller, IMMORTAL belongs to that class of horror fantasy that is so easy to pick up and so hard to put down!" Midwest Book Review. "Jeremy?s adventures combine the qualities of Outward Bound and Alice in Wonderland, with sufficient death and destruction to satisfy most Stephen King fans."--Craig Wilson Special to the Akron Beacon Journal, Book Talk column. "With fast-paced, compact scenes and dialog that moves the story in at a constant high-speed pace, makes Immortal the kind of book that is difficult to put down. After reading it, the images, and perhaps the nightmares, linger. Davidson has written a tightly plotted horror novel that deserves some attention. I will be looking for more work by this talented writer." -- Phillip Tomasso III for BookBrowser. "Despite Stephen King opening wide the door, few authors have given a good stab at doing epic scale horror. D. E. Davidson picks up the challenge, finding inspiration in King?s Dark Tower series, Straub?s Shadowland and both authors? The Talisman. The influences are very obvious, but Davidson has crafted an original enough concept for his novel to stand or fall on its own merits. My take is it stands... "Davidson handles his plotting well, serving up surprises that really surprise. His action sequences are exciting and frequent. The real world town of Prattville, Ohio is lovingly rendered and his characters are likable and believably flawed individuals facing extraordinary circumstances. The plot is complex, and so is the structure. Davidson?s skill in knowing when to show a glimpse of his cards and when to keep them hidden is remarkable. Both his story and his characters show a great deal of depth and intelligence. Even better, he avoids episodic battles that don?t advance his plot, a pandemic problem with epic quest fantasies. Nothing is thrown in for a quick thrill; every scene moves the story toward the final confrontation between good and evil. It?s always a joy to find a debut novel by an author who sets high goals and for the most part achieves them. I found that kind of joy in Immortal: A Linking of Souls."-- Garrett Peck, HELLNOTES NEWSLETTER review. (The Hellnotes Bookstore 27780 Donkey Mine Road, Oak Run, CA 96069) ?Here?s an apocalyptic dark fantasy work that has hints of King, Koontz, Straub and more. More than once while reading it I made a comparison to The Stand and The Dark Tower series, both by Stephen King (The Stand is one of my all time favorites).?-- Lynn Nicole Louis, SFReader. "IMMORTAL: A Linking of Souls is an intricate, thoroughly ambitious trip into that ever-changing labyrinth of life, afterlife and pre-life experienced by all people -- whether they?re cognizant of the journey or not. ?Fast-paced, yet erudite, this novel successfully straddles the boundaries of horror and metaphysical science fiction, with a strong emphasis on behavioral ethics and the role fate plays in all of our lives. ?The use of descriptive detail and characterization throughout is excellent. ?While it isn?t your average horror novel, it should satisfy fans of King, Straub and Koontz, as well as intrigue fans of cross-genre works." -- A. R. Morlan, author of THE AMULET and DARK JOURNEY (Bantam Books) and hundreds of short stories, articles and etc. ? ? ? About IMMORTAL J. N. Williamson, author/editor of 44+ published novels and books including HOW TO WRITE TALES OF HORROR, FANTASY & SCIENCE FICTION writes,"...I believe your book (IMMORTAL) depicts signs of brilliance in two principle areas: the clarity of each scene, especially those that are shockingly horrific, and the general flow of the work, each scene and section following one another in inevitable but unexpected sequence. ?Rather little is usually said about what I term ?flow? in a novel but I think it?s one of the semi-secret reasons why certain novels stand out from others coming out at the same time...." ? ? ? "IMMORTAL: A Linking of Souls mercilessly peals back the thin veil covering our comfortable conceptions of Time and Reality to reveal a chilling glimpse of a relentless evil lying in wait behind and beyond all things, a grand achievement in dark fantasy, horror, and heroic story telling!" -- C. Dean Andersson, author of The Bloodsong Saga series, I AM DRACULA and many other novels. ? ? ? Greg F. Gifune, editor at Thevin? Kitty Publications says, "With IMMORTAL, D. E. Davidson has created a suspenseful and entertaining read, but also a horor novel of unusual depth and intelligence. A provocative page-turner from a highly skilled author. "The Immortals is a lively re-imagining of classical mythology with an engaging premise, a page-turning plot, and an eye for the arresting and uncanny in contemporary urban life." --Deborah Harkness, New York Times bestselling author of A Discovery of Witches Jordanna Max Brodsky's wide-acclaimed debut, The Immortals, sets Greek Gods against a modern Manhattan backdrop. Look out for her next novel, Winter of the Gods, in February 2017.
