Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Apart from its actions on reproductive processes, prolactin (PRL) plays a role in maintaining the constancy of the internal milieu by regulation of the homeostatic processes. The present investigation focuses predominantly on the relationship between ventilatory acid-base imbalances and PRL secretion. In four studies different forms of respiratory stress were selected: inhalation of increased oxygen concentration, inhalation of increased carbon dioxide concentration, voluntary hyperventilation and repeated high intensity exercise. It was hypothezised that hyperoxia, intensive exercise and inhalation of increased CO2 concentration cause an augmentation of CO2 partial pressure at the central chemoreceptors of the brain, leading to an increase of ventilatory drive based on serotonergic system activation and thus enhanced PRL secretion. In contrast, increased CO2 elimination due to voluntary hyperventilation should not affect PRL secretion because the decrease of CO2 partial pressure does not affect PRL release per se, but only after serotonergic system activation due to initial hypercapnia. From the results of the present study it is concluded that an increase in PRL secretion is associated with progressive alkalosis under hyperoxia breathing. Decreasing CO2 by hyperoxia is related to hyperventilation. The findings coincide with similar results in previous studies by Becker et al. (1996). Transient initial hypercapnia in cerebro spinal fluid after short-term hyperoxia due to the Haldane effect was shown to be the most important mechanism increasing alveolar ventilation (Haldane, 1965). During the rebreathing test of our study, increase of pCO2 induced respiratory acidosis which lead to hyperventilation and PRL increment. Metabolic acidosis resulting from high intensive exercise is compensated by hyperventilation. This decreases pCO2 in order to prevent a further decline in pH. While acidosis is compensated by increasing CO2 elimination, plasma PRL concentration increases. In contrast, voluntary hyperventilation does not elicit PRL secretion because the decline in CO2 does not occur after initial acidosis. This indicates that a change in CO2 triggered in response to hypercapnic acidosis is necessary to induce PRL secretion. The exact underlying mechanism is still unknown, however it seems likely that increased ventilation and PRL secretion are related to serotonergic modulation, taking in account that serotonin plays a role in [...]

"The Stress Effect" helps readers understand the connection between their chronic stress and illness and provides effective programs for correcting imbalances caused by stress and inflammation. Long-term stress can lead to numerous health problems, including intestinal inflammation, which only exacerbates the situation. Additionally, seemingly harmless painkillers—nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which initially counter inflammation can actually over the long-term destroy the intestinal tract's mucous lining, promoting intestinal inflammation and leading to ill health. "The Stress Effect" provides suggestions for managing psychological stress, a common-sense diet that promotes balance, recommendations for natural supplements that can relieve pain without promoting intestinal inflammation, and a resource guide that directs the reader to doctors who are familiar with the range of therapies recommended.

Photoprotection, Photoinhibition, Gene Regulation, and Environment examines the processes whereby plants monitor environmental conditions and orchestrate their response to change, an ability paramount to the life of all plants. “Excess light”, absorbed by the light-harvesting systems of photosynthetic organisms, is an integrative indicator of the environment, communicating the presence of intense light and any conditions unfavorable for growth and photosynthesis. Key plant responses are photoprotection and photoinhibition. In this volume, the dual role of photoprotective responses in the preservation of leaf integrity and in redox signaling networks modulating stress acclimation, growth, and development is addressed. In addition, the still unresolved impact of photoinhibition on plant survival and productivity is discussed. Specific topics include dissipation of excess energy via thermal and other pathways, scavenging of reactive oxygen by antioxidants, proteins key to photoprotection and photoinhibition, peroxidation of lipids, as well as signaling by reactive oxygen, lipid-derived messengers, and other messengers that modulate gene expression. Approaches include biochemical, physiological, genetic, molecular, and field studies, addressing intense visible and ultraviolet light, winter conditions, nutrient deficiency, drought, and salinity.

Can traumatic life events cause depression? Studies generally point to a connection between adverse life events and depression. However, establishing a causal rather than associative connection, the key concern of this book, is more problematic. What neurobiological changes may be induced by stress and depression, and to what extent do these changes correspond? The authors structure their examination around three major themes: the pathophysiological role of stress in depression; whether or not a subtype of depression exists that is particularly stress-inducible; and, finally, how best to diagnose and treat depression in relation to its biological underpinnings.

While white racism has global dimensions, it has an unshakeable lease on life in South African political organizations and its educational system. Donnarae MacCann and Yulisa Maddy here provide a thorough and provocative analysis of South African children's literature during the key decade around Nelson Mandela's release from prison. Their research demonstrates that the literature of this period was derived from the same milieu -- intellectual, educational, religious, political, and economic -- that brought white supremacy to South Africa during colonial times. This volume is a signal contribution to the study of children's literature and its relation to racism and social conditions.

Eight years ago, four psychologists with varying backgrounds but a common in terest in the impact of environmental stress on behavior and health met to plan a study of the effects of aircraft noise on children. The impetus for the study was an article in the Los Angeles Times about architectural interventions that were planned for several noise-impacted schools under the air corridor of Los Angeles Interna tional Airport. These interventions created an opportunity to study the same chil dren during noise exposure and then later after the exposure had been attenuated. The study was designed to test the generality of several noise effects that had been well established in laboratory experimental studies. It focused on three areas: the relationship between noise and personal control, noise and attention, and noise and cardiovascular response. Two years later, a second study, designed to replicate and extend findings from the first, was conducted.
