I have grown so much, and particularly these last couple of years, that I know that what some people believe about me has nothing to do with my true value. It goes back to the man from La Jolla who instantly judged me and my character based simply upon where I began. He knew absolutely nothing about me but that I was born in Bakersfield in the late ‘40s and that my family came there from Oklahoma to find work. To him the case was closed. Were he to know Jenna and that I make her happy, he would have to suspect that there may be some substance to me. I’m going to tell you about a very new and exciting place for me. That man didn’t hurt me. In fact, he might have been the person who made me realize that I am proud of from where I came. I liken it to having run a touchdown from the opposite end zone.

The Goal of this Book: The goal of this book is to give you two things regarding hedge funds, private equity, and other asset management firms. Two things that anybody can learn and then use to talk about with their friends and coworkers. The first is the knowledge - a foundation tool set of key words, industry phrases and financial concepts made clear in plain english. This book puts meanings and understanding to terms you may have already heard in finance but did not quite understand. There is no math and there are no equations. This is not an academic paper nor does it want to be. The goal is to help you grasp that concepts. Just interesting stories and detailed explanations to get you familiar with a variety of topics: * How hedge and private equity funds are structured * Who their investors are * Pension funds and endowments. The model practiced by the $20 billion Yale Endowment and the $650 billion Norway Pension Fund * Fund investing strategies. Event-driven (including IPOs, splits and spinoffs), merger arbitrage, private equity type sidepockets, and more * Junk bonds, options, swaps, and other derivatives * Leveraged buyouts and other types of private equity investing * Venture capital funds and big changes affecting the venture capital industryThe second thing you get makes this more than just a compilation of Wikipedia articles. Imagine yourself sitting next to a fund or an investor in a fund and observing them do something or make a move. Sure you want to know "what" they did but the stuff that would be truly interesting is the "why". What is going through their head in doing this? This book walks you through it all so that you get to take in the mindsets, perspectives and incentives of the fund's managers, investors and more. There is a whole lot more strategy going on than what you might at first think. It does not matter who you are: A student in school thinking about joining the alternative asset management industry, a retiree who wants to know more about these weird fund things, or a person who works with or near a hedge fund but has no idea what they really do. Does not matter. The only thing you need to have is a desire to start learning. If you are familiar with some of it, you can build on it here. If you are beginning from scratch (just as I myself was), you are in good hands.About 3.0: The third version of From Zero to Sixty is an update on many of the growing trends in hedge funds and private equity from the rise and fall of global macro investing to the emergence of sovereign wealth funds as the most powerful investing entities on Earth. Performance figures and statistics are updated. New concepts like short squeezes are brought to light. It is more of what you want to know. Despite the 3.0 moniker and the new cover, this book's goal remains the same: Bring people up to speed on a fast-moving and complicated industry full of difficult lingo. This book is an education, a learning course set up with you in mind. That has not changed. The world changes every day. This book wants you to help you keep up with it.

At week 20 in my pregnancy, our child was diagnosed with a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. We were told there was a hole in her diaphragm, and that her intestines were crowding her chest. She would undergo surgery at birth, and face many trials in order to survive. My husband and I were scared, but we clung to our faith and believed that God had placed this little girl in our lives for a reason.I had begun an online blog shortly after my husband and I were married. It started as a humorous twist to the struggles and triumphs after “I Do”. My writings took a sharp turn when we found out about our little girl and her diagnosis. From that day on, the blog has served as a source of information to Brooklyn's many supporters. These posts were all originally typed on an iPhone, and then posted via tumblr, on my blog site. The medical terminology presented in this book is not claimed to be accurate or correct. I, as a Mother, took what the doctors provided us each day, and interpreted the information to the best of my abilities and knowledge. There was no further research involved in my posts. All facts were gathered from the daily discussions her doctors had when meeting at Brooklyn's bedside. These writings bear raw emotion, and the religious journey I took whilst Brooklyn fought for her life. They reflect a glimpse into the hope and fears of our family's experience. I feel that Brooklyn's story reaches out to anyone who has ever questioned “why?” No matter what battle you face in life, Brooklyn's perseverance is purely encouraging. I am honored to share her story, but feel it necessary to prepare readers for a somewhat patchy work of literature. I do not claim to be an expert writer, nor do I feel this book is perfect. I wrote because it was an outlet. I was able to release the pressure I felt daily from life in the hospital. Brooklyn Elizabeth Hales was born on November 28th, 2010. She was the most beautiful thing we had ever witnessed. Without a chance to hold her in my arms, she was whisked away to the NICU at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, Texas. Hooked to tubes and wires, our little girl was struggling to hold on. Over the next few days, she fell in and out of stability. Her vitals jumped up and down as the doctors worked hard to control her treatment. We took it one day at a time. Brooklyn has proven herself a fighter and has touched the hearts of many. We will forever be indebted to the family, friends, and medical staff who originally followed her story and remain faithful to this day. Our family was blessed to have an overwhelming support group. Brooklyn continues to amaze us with her endurance, and we are grateful for the honor to be her parents. She has taught us all to "have a little faith", and I encourage you to learn from her journey.

Kinky Friedman, who would be our contemporary Will Rogers if Will Rogers had been Jewish, smoked cigars, and foolish enough to believe he could govern the great state of Texas, returns with this collection of hilariously raunchy, sometimes poignant, and always insightful essays. With fearless wit and wisdom born from many a late night's experience, Kinky offers both pearls and cowpats that touch on life, death, and everything in between. Considering the current predicament of our nation and the world at large, the question is, "What would Kinky do?" His answers invoke Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Judy Garland, George Bush, and other cultural touchstones; reflect on Texas etiquette, smoking in bars, mullet haircuts, immigration policy, and how Don Imus died for our sins; and advise on how to handle a nonstop talker on a long flight, how to deliver the perfect air kiss, and what to do when a redneck hollers "Hey y'all, watch this!" Whether he's "the new Mark Twain" (Southern Living), "in a class with Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain, Will Rogers, and, yes, Henny Youngman" (The New York Post), "a Texas legend" (President George W. Bush), or "the Mother Teresa of literature" (Willie Nelson), Kinky Friedman is an outrageously funny and uncommonly smart observer of our common predicament: life and what to do about it. A little friendly advice from "Texas for Dummies" *Get you some brontosaurus-foreskin boots and a big ol' cowboy hat. Always remember, only two kinds of people can get away with wearing their hats indoors: cowboys and Jews. Try to be one of them. *Get your hair fixed right. If you're male, cut it into a "mullet" (short on the sides and top, long in the back---think Billy Ray Cyrus). If you're female, make it as big as possible, with lots of teasing and hair spray. If you can hide a buck knife in there, you're ready. *Buy you a big ol' pickup truck or a Cadillac. I myself drive a Yom Kippur Clipper. That's a Jewish Cadillac---stops on a dime and picks it up. *Don't be surprised to find small plastic bags of giant dill pickles in local convenience stores. *Everything goes better with picante sauce. No exceptions. *Don't tell us how you did it up there. Nobody cares.

Some of the greatest scientists including Poisson, Faraday, Maxwell, Rayleigh, and Einstein have contributed to the theory of composite materials. Mathematically, it is the study of partial differential equations with rapid oscillations in their coefficients. Although extensively studied for more than a hundred years, an explosion of ideas in the last five decades (and particularly in the last three decades) has dramatically increased our understanding of the relationship between the properties of the constituent materials, the underlying microstructure of a composite, and the overall effective (electrical, thermal, elastic) moduli which govern the macroscopic behavior. This renaissance has been fueled by the technological need for improving our knowledge base of composites, by the advance of the underlying mathematical theory of homogenization, by the discovery of new variational principles, by the recognition of how important the subject is to solving structural optimization problems, and by the realization of the connection with the mathematical problem of quasiconvexification. This 2002 book surveys these exciting developments at the frontier of mathematics.

A witty, keenly observant look at our Internet-obsessed culture Anna Krestler is adrift. The Internet has draped itself, kudzu-like, over her brain, which makes it even more difficult to confront the question of what to do when she is dismissed from her job as a cubicle serf at a midtown law firm. Despite the exhortations of Leslie, her friend and volunteer life coach, Anna seeks refuge in the back alleys of craigslist, where she connects with Taj, an adherent of a nebulous movement known as Nowism that occupies the most self-absorbed fringes of the art world. Art, Anna decides, is what will provide the meaningful life she's been searching for and knows she deserves. She joins Taj's "crew" and is drawn into his grand experimental film project. But making art is hard and microwaving pouch foods is easy. Soon enough Anna finds herself distracted by myriad other quests: remembering to ask Leslie "How are you?," reducing her intake of caloric drinks, and parrying her mother's insistence that she attend hairdressing school. But when Anna's twenty-seven-year-old roommate—a perpetual intern named Brie—announces her pregnancy, it forces Anna to confront reality, setting off a chain of events that lead to a horrifying climax of betrayal. Alina Simone's Note to Self is a shrewdly perceptive, hilarious, moving tale about friendship, art, and the search for a meaningful life in an era of rampant narcissism.
