I specialize in early reading and math concepts.
Teaching early literacy and reading with movement and play works for all learners. Emerging readers master the sounds and decoding through play. Zoophonics teaches phonetic decoding using animal actions, sounds, and activities that cement new learning into long-term memory. For older elementary students who have disinterest or difficulties reading, using high-content but leveled material ensures these students gain skills. Practice reading passages at their level, while introducing more challenging decoding and concepts results in better reading ability.
The concepts necessary for math foundations and understanding are: number sense, subitizing, counting, operations, pattern, measurement, data analysis, spatial relationships and shapes. Teaching these concepts through the manipulation of objects, recognition of items in space, the hundreds chart, ten-frames, base ten objects, and the decomposition of numbers in fun and novel ways gives students confidence and the knowledge that learning is fun.

I enjoy my adult ESL learners and the process they are committed to. Learning a new language later in life poses challenges, and I get to be their guide and mentor.
Having spent over 30 years teaching children, it is still what I love to do. I was an elementary classroom teacher from Kindergarten through 8th grade. I taught reading skills at every level and integrated literature and concept learning into many activities.
I have been a reading intervention teacher, specializing in reading and processing difficulties. My training in using ZooPhonics to supplement different reading curriculums has proven to be an excellent way to teach children. ZooPhonics methodologies are one of the best practices for emergent readers. These techniques engage students with activities, animals, sounds and fun. Students become phonetic decoders while they are actively engaged in play.
